Guitarist Cal Collins had the highest visibility of his career when he was recording regularly for Concord during 1978-1981. Since he returned permanently to Cincinnati in the early '80s, Collins has had a lower profile in the jazz world, although his talent has not declined. On the first of two recordings for Mopro, the swing-based guitarist teams up with pianist Steve Schmidt, bassist Lynn Seaton, and drummer John Van Ohlen for five veteran standards (including "Castle Rock," "Wabash Blues," and "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You"), plus his own "Crack'd Rib Blues." This hard-to-find LP contains excellent straight-ahead music that features Cal Collins in top form.

Cal Collins' recording debut (performed over three years before he started making records for Concord) was actually not released until 1984. This live set (cut in Cincinnati) features Collins in a trio with Kenny Poole on "Epiphone Guitar" (which sounds like a bass) and drummer Terry Moore. The musicians stretch out on five selections on this LP including a couple of swing-era standards ("I'm Through With Love" and "Hand Me Down My Walking Cane"), "My Favorite Things" and "Milestones." Collins already had his style down at this early stage, making this out-of-print album of interest to straightahead jazz guitar collectors.
