Lorez Alexandria's Discovery/Trend output of the 1980s was fairly consistent, but the veteran jazz vocalist outdid herself with her three-volume tribute to Johnny Mercer. Dedicating three albums to one composer might seem excessive, but when the composer is someone as prolific as Mercer and the singer is as fine an interpreter of lyrics as Alexandria, it doesn't seem so excessive after all. On Vol. 2: Harlem Butterfly, Alexandria applies her interpretive powers to such famous songs as "Come Rain or Come Shine," "Too Marvelous for Words," "Skylark," and, of course, "Harlem Butterfly." Also quite memorable is Alexandria's version of "Mandy Is Two," a song that was written for Mercer's daughter Amanda. "Mandy Is Two" isn't in a class with "Laura" -- and it isn't well known enough to be considered a standard -- but it's a sweet and affectionate tune that parents can relate to. On this CD, Lorez has solid backing from L.A. pianist Gildo Mahones, whose quartet also includes saxman Herman Riley, bassist Andy Simpkins, and drummer Carl Burnette. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi
