BrazilOnGuitar says: BP's first LP follows the heavily orchestrated sound of the
fifties. Evident are influences of Django Reinhardt, one of his role models. BP
plays jazz standards like Stella by Starlight and compositions like Na
Baixa do Sapateiro, which would remain in his repertoire for the rest of his
life. There is only one composition by BP himself: Samba Triste. On his second
record there would be more of his compositions.

BrazilOnGuitar says: On the second LP there are heavily orchestrated arrangements in the style of the fifties, as well as pieces with smaller combos, something he would later prefer for long periods. Instead of jazz standards there are first solo pieces by BP, where his classical education can be heard. Compositions like Fluido de Saudade reminds of Francisco Tarrega.
In 1962 BP would record with big names of the jazz world: Herbie Mann and Jimmy Pratt.

BrazilOnGuitar says: This first record for Barclay in 1964 is one of Baden´s
most famous records in Europe. The sound of the original record was never the
best. To much bad re-printings exist and circled around on vinyl and also on cd.
The begin of a much better sound was the japanese cd release in 1999 and the new
release in 2005 to the fifth anniversary of Badens passing. Both cds are ways to rediscover this album, which has a exotic mix of brazilian and european compositions. The new french cd is a digipack with a 10-page-booklet with three pictures. Missing is the orignal layout of the gatefoldcover as a time-document and the linernotes* by the producer from the another french pressing. The japanese edition (POCJ-2765) includes the complete cover, but not the linernotes. We can´t understand the choice of the pictures of 1970 and 1974 in the new cd-edition. Pictures of his second arrival in Paris would be better: a Brazilian carrying a musical world in his guitarcase. |

BrazilOnGuitar says: In 1965 BP returned to Paris to record his second album
for Barclay with the French singer Billy Nencioli. They composed twelve songs.
The texts were written by Billy Nencioli, the music and arrangements were done
by BP, who until 1965 gained a lot of experience in accompaning. Unmistakably he
is accompaning Billy Nencioli in all songs. The style of the songs varies from
dance songs to more complex jazz songs. We do not understand the lyrics, but
this record has its charme and we enjoy listening to it. We did not find much information about Billy Nencioli himself, Charles Aznavour remembered him as […] a gentleman, a pacifist in the times of the Algerian war and a exceptional composer of songs, that came directly from the heart like "On lui a donné", "Ça m' regarde" , "Les poteaux", "Tante Amélie", "On ne trouve ça qu'à Paris" [...] . Billy Nencioli passed away at age 65 in 1998. We thank Robert G. (Germany) for his translation and Olaf (Netherlands) for the pictures of the brazilian edition. |

I am really liking this Baden Powell live record! Kudos to the almost-indie label
Biscoito Fino for bringing it back into circulation with the reissue, although I
am not totally in love with the mastering job. The artwork is a little on the
sparse side too for a full-price release, basically just reproducing the info on
the original back cover. But its the music that counts and this is a wonderful
and (until now) rather rare album to come across. Includes Baden playing some
Bach (Prelúdio em Ré Menor) and also a tune Vinicius co-wrote with Pixinguinha
(Lamento). The rest of the tunes are all compositions by Baden and/or Vinicius,
a lot of 'afro-sambas.'

BrazilOnGuitar says: Baden is an outtake album from the Tristeza on Guitar
sessions in July 1966. They are alternative takes with slight variations e.g. in
Das Rosas or Round Midnight and unused songs like Canto de
Ossanha or Lamento, one title was named differently. They have a very
different sound. The SABA recording sound have a stronger bass sound, probably
according to the musical taste of producer Joachim E. Berendt. The sound of the
Brazilian Elenco pressing sounds more intimate and personal, without the strong
bass sound on all instruments.
Thus it is not a simple re-pressing of the famous SABA record, but shows a certain independence, reaching uniqueness. This is emphasised by using rare pictures, Baden Powell ether with Herbie Mann, who did not take part in the recording session, and a less typical PR picture showing Baden doing a chord spanning six frets.
Baden is a well-done outtake album, unfortunately the only in his discography. BOG recommends listening to both recordings, if possible the Japanese CD version of Tristeza on Guitar and the Baden-reissue from 2003 (whose tracklist is wrong, Sarava instead if Samba de Bencao, furthermore there is a graphical mistake in the front cover).

The answer to the world-class trivia
question "Name the guitarist who played with Artie Shaw, Lester Young, Charlie
Parker, and Chico Marx," Barney Kessel's unusual discography is testimony to his
versatility and professionalism. Born in Muskogee, he followed in the
professional footsteps of fellow Oklahoman Charlie Christian and evinced a
similarly unswerving dedication to swing. Although his later recording
frequently paired him with fellow guitarists Charlie Byrd and Herb Ellis, these
1955 West coast recordings showcase Kessel as both a soloist and leader in
medium combos. A tribute to swing style music, To Swing or Not to Swing
mixes Kessel originals with such standards of that era as "Indiana," "Moten
Swing," "Louisiana," and "Embraceable You." On board are trumpeter Harry Edison,
saxophonists Georgie Auld and Bill Perkins, drummer Shelly Manne, and pianist
Jimmy Rowles. Among the album's most outstanding tracks are Kessel's own "Begin
the Blues," and a dreamy reading of Lionel Hampton's "Midnight Sun." A real find
for guitar fanatics and West coast jazz fans alike. --Fred Goodman

review
by Michael G. Nastos
Moanin' includes some of the greatest music Blakey produced in the studio with arguably his very best band. There are three tracks that are immortal and will always stand the test of time. The title selection is a pure tuneful melody stewed in a bluesy shuffle penned by pianist Bobby Timmons, while tenor saxophonist Benny Golson's classy, slowed "Along Came Betty" and the static, militaristic "Blues March" will always have a home in the repertoire of every student or professional jazz band. "Are You Real?" has the most subtle of melody lines, and "Drum Thunder Suite" has Blakey's quick blasting tom-tom-based rudiments reigning on high as the horns sigh, leading to hard bop. "Come Rain or Come Shine" is the piece that commands the most attention, a highly modified, lilting arrangement where the accompanying staggered, staccato rhythms contrast the light-hearted refrains. Certainly a complete and wholly satisfying album, Moanin' ranks with the very best of Blakey and what modern jazz offered in the late '50s and beyond.

Alice Coltrane
1958
A Monastic Trio
The CD reissue of Alice Coltrane's watershed first album after the death of her husband John has been repackaged -- and wonderfully remastered -- with an unreleased solo piano tune and two tracks from Cosmic Music added to the original album. In some cases a compendium wouldn't work, but all of it falls into place -- except for the solo "Altruvista" from 1967 at the end -- because of the chronological sequencing from January through June of 1968. There are three different sessions and two different bands at work on A Monastic Trio; the first is actually a quartet with Pharoah Sanders playing tenor, flute, and bass clarinet respectively on "Lord, Help Me to Be," "The Sun," and "Phnedaruth," with Jimmy Garrison on bass and Ben Riley on drums. The other five pieces are by a trio with Garrison and the fiery drummer Rashied Ali. Musically, the works here move from the deep bluesy modal structures that Alice Coltrane so loved in John's repertoire. Here she composes on the first three tunes for herself and Sanders. All of these works, with their deep Eastern tinges in the intervals juxtaposed against Western blues phrasing, are wondrously droning and emotional exercises. Sanders moves the music outside its frame of reference, adding his harmonic invention -- which is truly singular -- to Coltrane's blues-making, creating music that feels, anyway, as if it is somehow eternal. The five tracks with Ali and Garrison are more rooted in traditional soul-jazz and gospel themes, and made somehow exotic by the use of bells and Ali's underhanded, fluidly rolling drumming. Garrison could punch up any blues line and make it sing, and he does, especially on "Gospel Trane" and "Oceanic Beloved." "Altruvista" is an odd piece of improvisation based on whole-tone scales. It's quite beautiful and flows without a hint of forced emotion or mechanical intrusion. Really, it's a long cadenza, teetering on the edge of an abyss that thankfully never swallows it, and the perfect closer for an already fine album.
