BrazilOnGuitar says: BP's first LP follows the heavily orchestrated sound of the
fifties. Evident are influences of Django Reinhardt, one of his role models. BP
plays jazz standards like Stella by Starlight and compositions like Na
Baixa do Sapateiro, which would remain in his repertoire for the rest of his
life. There is only one composition by BP himself: Samba Triste. On his second
record there would be more of his compositions.

BrazilOnGuitar says: On the second LP there are heavily orchestrated arrangements in the style of the fifties, as well as pieces with smaller combos, something he would later prefer for long periods. Instead of jazz standards there are first solo pieces by BP, where his classical education can be heard. Compositions like Fluido de Saudade reminds of Francisco Tarrega.
In 1962 BP would record with big names of the jazz world: Herbie Mann and Jimmy Pratt.

BrazilOnGuitar says: This first record for Barclay in 1964 is one of Baden´s
most famous records in Europe. The sound of the original record was never the
best. To much bad re-printings exist and circled around on vinyl and also on cd.
The begin of a much better sound was the japanese cd release in 1999 and the new
release in 2005 to the fifth anniversary of Badens passing. Both cds are ways to rediscover this album, which has a exotic mix of brazilian and european compositions. The new french cd is a digipack with a 10-page-booklet with three pictures. Missing is the orignal layout of the gatefoldcover as a time-document and the linernotes* by the producer from the another french pressing. The japanese edition (POCJ-2765) includes the complete cover, but not the linernotes. We can´t understand the choice of the pictures of 1970 and 1974 in the new cd-edition. Pictures of his second arrival in Paris would be better: a Brazilian carrying a musical world in his guitarcase. |

for Barclay with the French singer Billy Nencioli. They composed twelve songs.
The texts were written by Billy Nencioli, the music and arrangements were done
by BP, who until 1965 gained a lot of experience in accompaning. Unmistakably he
is accompaning Billy Nencioli in all songs. The style of the songs varies from
dance songs to more complex jazz songs. We do not understand the lyrics, but
this record has its charme and we enjoy listening to it. We did not find much information about Billy Nencioli himself, Charles Aznavour remembered him as […] a gentleman, a pacifist in the times of the Algerian war and a exceptional composer of songs, that came directly from the heart like "On lui a donné", "Ça m' regarde" , "Les poteaux", "Tante Amélie", "On ne trouve ça qu'à Paris" [...] . Billy Nencioli passed away at age 65 in 1998. We thank Robert G. (Germany) for his translation and Olaf (Netherlands) for the pictures of the brazilian edition. |

I am really liking this Baden Powell live record! Kudos to the almost-indie label
Biscoito Fino for bringing it back into circulation with the reissue, although I
am not totally in love with the mastering job. The artwork is a little on the
sparse side too for a full-price release, basically just reproducing the info on
the original back cover. But its the music that counts and this is a wonderful
and (until now) rather rare album to come across. Includes Baden playing some
Bach (Prelúdio em Ré Menor) and also a tune Vinicius co-wrote with Pixinguinha
(Lamento). The rest of the tunes are all compositions by Baden and/or Vinicius,
a lot of 'afro-sambas.'

sessions in July 1966. They are alternative takes with slight variations e.g. in
Das Rosas or Round Midnight and unused songs like Canto de
Ossanha or Lamento, one title was named differently. They have a very
different sound. The SABA recording sound have a stronger bass sound, probably
according to the musical taste of producer Joachim E. Berendt. The sound of the
Brazilian Elenco pressing sounds more intimate and personal, without the strong
bass sound on all instruments.
Thus it is not a simple re-pressing of the famous SABA record, but shows a certain independence, reaching uniqueness. This is emphasised by using rare pictures, Baden Powell ether with Herbie Mann, who did not take part in the recording session, and a less typical PR picture showing Baden doing a chord spanning six frets.
Baden is a well-done outtake album, unfortunately the only in his discography. BOG recommends listening to both recordings, if possible the Japanese CD version of Tristeza on Guitar and the Baden-reissue from 2003 (whose tracklist is wrong, Sarava instead if Samba de Bencao, furthermore there is a graphical mistake in the front cover).

BrazilOnGuitar says: There is the anecdote that Baden Powell was very drunk during the Tempo feliz sessions. It seems believable, because the film shots of Round Midnight prove to which precise playing and musicality he was capable of in such condition. It is said that the rather shy Baden Powell could only be more extrovert by drinking alcohol. This is very regrettable and he payed a high price, recording such an expressive, relaxed album like Tempo feliz.
This can be seen in his commands, his rhythmic finger clicking and humming along to his musical ideas, which reminds of Keith Jarrett and was rather rare for Baden Powell. It is impressive with which tone, coordination and endurance he played in this jam session.
It is the only recording he did with the Brazilian harmonica player Mauricio Einhorn. Even though they play completely different instruments there were no boundaries between Mauricio and Baden, they were listening and responding to each other. It may seem unfortunate that this was their only recording but nothing remained unsaid. The record's grooves preserve their musical ideas and contain material for the following generations of guitarists and harmonica players. Tempo feliz is one of the best records, that Baden Powell did in the sixties.
