This CD has the 1952 George Shearing Quintet featured in top form on a full set of previously unreleased radio broadcasts emanating from Birdland. In addition to performing some of their hits (including "Lullaby of Birdland" and "September in the Rain"), the group interprets some lesser-known material. Guest artist Teddi King is in top form during her four appearances; guitarist Toots Thielemans has a couple of his earliest harmonica solos on "Don't Blame Me" and "Body and Soul," and vibraphonist Joe Roland shows how underrated a soloist he was. During the announcements between songs, Shearing is often quite humorous, at one point imitating a half-dozen different pianists (including Erroll Garner and Teddy Wilson). All in all, this is a highly enjoyable release. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi

GEORGE SHEARING - MY SHIP (1975)
1. My Ship
2. Yesterdays
3. Happy Days Are Here Again
4. When I Fall in Love
5. Londonderry Air
6. April in Paris
7. The Entertainer
8. Tenderly
9. How Deep Is the Ocean?
10. Autumn in New York
11. Greensleeves
12. Send in the Clowns
This solo piano set by George Shearing (which has been reissued on CD through Polygram) is quite eccentric and unpredictable. Freed from the constraints of his popular Quintet, Shearing lets his imagination loose on songs that include "My Ship," "Happy Days Are Here Again," "The Entertainer" (which is turned into jazz after a rag beginning), "Londonberry Air," and -- unfortunately -- "Send in the Clowns," on which he makes the mistake of singing. Some of the classical allusions are a bit too cute, but Shearing's wit and charm eventually win one over. ~ Scott Yanow

This Concord CD features Shearing and Swainson performing a variety of material including Charlie Parker's "Dexterity," "You Must Believe in Spring," a traditional Japanese melody and a couple of ballads. In addition, singer Ernestine Anderson sits in with the group on "As Long As I Live" and a typically soulful "Please Send Me Someone to Love" before the duo concludes the show (recorded at the second annual Fujitsu-Concord Jazz Festival) with a five-song Duke Ellington medley. A well-rounded and consistently enjoyable program.
