Philology producer and owner Paolo Piangiarelli's intention was for alto saxophonist Lee Konitz and the young Italian pianist Stefano Bollani to improvise on various themes initiated by the leader. But when Bollani took to the project and produced some surprising lines of his own, Konitz decided that many of these on-the-spot creations deserved to be jointly credited. Whether just one of the musicians is playing or both men are heard, the results are fascinating, producing music that is unpredictable, often very melodic, and always stimulating. The phenomenal sound of this well-recorded studio session adds to the appeal of this extremely rewarding CD. Ken Dryden, Rovi
