TEDDY WILSON - COLE PORTER CLASSICS (1977)
1. Get Out Of Town
2. Just One Of Those Things
3. I Get A Kick Out Of You
4. I Love You
5. It's All Right With Me
6. Why Shouldn't I
7. Love For Sale
8. Too Darn Blue
9. I've Got You Under My Skin
10. Easy To Love
11. What Is This Thing Called Love?
Here Teddy Wilson revives such forgotten Broadway classics as "Get Out Of Town," "It's Alright With Me," "Why Shouldn't I," and others. Performing solo, Wilson creates a large, almost orchestral sound on the piano. Some of Cole Porter's better-known tunes are also featured, among them meticulous versions of "I've Got You Under My Skin," "What Is This Thing Called Love?" and "I Get a Kick Out of You."
Wilson's stride piano stylings are best employed on the brisk "Just One of Those Things" and his colorful, lush ballad playing is best evidenced on his rubato version of "I Love You." In general, the mood here is both wistful and vibrant. Wilson's interpretations of these Porter classics offer a glimpse back through time to an earlier style of piano playing, one marked by romanticism rather than the sometimes cold intellectualism of bebop.
